Scriptures On Thankfulness

“Now therefore may it please you to bless the house of your servant, so that it may continue forever before you. For you, O Lord God, have spoken, and with your blessing shall the house of your servant be blessed forever.” 2 Samuel 7:29

David prayed this after the Lord promised never to depart from David’s house. This scripture is special to me because I desire the Lord to bless my sweet little family and want nothing more than for my children’s children’s children to continue living before the Lord. I’m sure it’s the desire of your heart as well!

Matthew Henry comments, “That prayer which is found in the tongue only will not please God; it must be found in the heart; the heart must be lifted up and poured out before God.” This week I am thankful for the godly heritage our family has and the special time we spent singing and praying and sharing in His goodness yesterday. My prayer is the same as David’s, and hopefully with the fervency Henry writes of. Let it be so, Oh Lord!

Scriptures On Thankfulness

Hebrews 12:28 - Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe.

As we go about our day of being Thankful may we remember what we are truly thankful for; His mercies that are anew every morning (Lam. 3:22-23), his grace which is sufficient for the day (2 Cor 12:9) and our hope that we have in Him (Ps 33:20). May you all have a blessed Thanksgiving! ~ Sharlyn Eddy

Scriptures On Thankfulness

Thirteen years ago, during my second pregnancy, I was put on bed rest with pre-term labor. There was not much to do but stare at the dusty ceiling fan and wait.

I found it hard to be thankful even though I knew this was best for our unborn baby. I felt stranded, I felt isolated, I felt unproductive and helpless to change the situation.

In God’s kindness He sent a new friend who had gone through the same thing a few years earlier. She gently pointed me to 2 Corinthians 1:3-6 which says, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ's sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too. If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer.”

What an encouragement for me! I’m thankful God met me. I was hopeful God would use this situation to strengthen others. It wasn’t just about me; it never was.

As the years have passed, God’s brought many moms in a similar situation across my path needing the same encouragement I needed. I’m thankful He used a trial I did not want to bear fruit first in me, and then in others. ~ Adrea Thomas

Scriptures On Thankfulness

Thanksgiving morning I love to make homemade rolls while I watch the annual Thanksgiving Day Parade. I especially love the marching bands and the excerpts from the Broadway shows. But even these lively and cheerful things are not enough to lift a heavy heart. My heart goes out today to anyone whose heart is heavy and burdened with care. Be encouraged today. God is able in the midst of painful circumstances to speak to you through His Word, through his saints, through many other means of grace. I was feeling a little overwhelmed the other day and worrying about little Carter. A friend prayed for me and reminded me that God not only knew about Carter's situation but He created his little body in the first place. Just this one little phrase took my attention off of the trouble and put it back on God. I had lost my focus as I was overwhelmed with worry about what may be around the corner. My circumstances didn't change any but these words of wisdom reminded me that no purpose of God's can be thwarted. I'm still not sure all that He is intending to accomplish with Carter's illness but I know that He is trustworthy. If you are struggling with burdens as the holiday approaches know that the Word of God can speak to your soul and lift your spirits in a way that a hundred marching bands could never do. Meditate on the attributes of God and let your soul take in reminders of His eternal nature, His omnipotence, His Sovereign rule over our lives. "Lord, Thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were born, Or Thou didst give birth to the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God. Psalm 90:1,2 Again in Psalm 91 it says, "He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, 'My refuge and my fortress, My God in whom I trust'". So if you find yourself overwhelmed with cares speak to your soul. Join the Psalmist in Psalm 42:5: "Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him for the help of His presence." ~ Brenda Edwards

Scriptures On Thankfulness

As we spend time this week preparing for the Thanksgiving meal and time spent with family and friends, we must not neglect to prepare for gratefulness. This prayer from The Valley of Vision is a wonderful way to begin preparing for Thanksgiving day. I invite you to pause and meditate on this quote from Mr. Charles Spurgeon. Surely it will also stir up gratefulness to God for His many blessings:

"The fear of a man who really knows the love and goodness of God, will be somewhat of this kind: He will fear lest he should really be, or should seem to be, ungrateful. 'What' he asks, 'can I do? I am drowned in mercy. It is not as though my ship were sailing in a sea of mercy; I have been so loaded with the favour of the Lord that my vessel has gone right down, and the ocean of God’s love and mercy has rolled right over the masthead. What can I do O Lord? If thou had given me only a little mercy, I might have done something, in return, to express my gratitude. But oh! Thy great mercy in electing me, in redeeming me, in converting me, and in preserving me, and in all the goodness of thy providence toward me;--what can I do in return for all these favour? I feel struck dumb; and I am afraid, lest I should have a dumb heart as well as a dumb tongue; I fear lest I should grieve Thee by anything that looks like ingratitude.” May your Thanksgiving be full of sweet moments of gratitude as you contemplate the ocean of God's love and mercies! "

O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!" 1 Chronicles 16:34
